Though he appears to be a classic extrovert, Lappalainen requires periods of solitude to recharge his social battery -- and to get any meaningful work done. His cheerfully cynical air masks a deep desire for justice and ethical conduct; he sees life as an exciting drama, and feels that deep, intense emotions are necessary for a significant life. His gregarious nature and natural empathy and charisma make him an effective diplomat in everyday social encounters, and though he affects a disdain for authority -- especially authority granted solely by fiat, not by experience -- he more often than not finds himself gravitating naturally to a leadership role. "Of some concern is a childhood history of Type II Bipolar Disorder, which flared dramatically during his secondary education. It has been under control since then, though it sometimes manifests as an exaggeration of his normal cyclic routine of working alone and socializing with friends. Also to be noted are his religious beliefs. It is understood that the Lappalainen family, like a significant minority of the long-time residents of Louhi (centered mostly in the southern Department of New Uusimaa), practices an obscure form of occultism known as "chaos magic." This archaic belief system does not appear to have an effect on his day-to-day life, though it is unknown how seriously Lappalainen takes this religion -- he is reluctant to discuss it with others, and his wishes on this subject have been respected. It is important to note that his beliefs will not negatively impact his duties as an officer of Starfleet. "It is the opinion of this Counselor that, with some seasoning, Cadet Lappalainen will make a fine addition to the Fleet." -- Dr. Phillip Hine Counselor, Starfleet Academy Janne hails from Louhi, a barely habitable class N satellite of VŠinŠmšinen, a brown dwarf orbiting a red dwarf. The combined radiation of the weak star and VŠinŠmšinen warm Louhi to the point that human habitation is barely possible. Tidal forces have locked Louhi in place so that one side permanently faces VŠinŠmšinen, and one side permanently faces away, but there is some wobble -- enough to cause brief "days" and "nights" for the habitable twilight belt, as VŠinŠmšinen rises and sets over the horizon. These vary in length according to the seasons provided by Louhi's axial tilt. The wobble also drives the extreme tectonic plate action of Louhi, which provides most of the energy to run its biosphere. Life on Louhi is weird, existing as it does between some rather harsh extremes, but it has given rise to sentience: a race of highly telepathic aquatic giants, vaguely reminiscent of Earth's whales, affectionately nicknamed the "Moomintrolls," or Moomins. Louhi was settled by the Federation before they realized the Moomins were sentient; once this discovery was made, and some differences between the two were settled ("Umm, we didn't know anyone lived here. Mind if we stay?"), the Moomins (their own mental picture for themselves isn't easily translated, and there is some controversy over what the exact connotations are) joined the Federation -- mostly as a formality; it's very rare and very, very difficult for something so large and dependant on immersion in water to do much spacefaring. Janne loves planets, and loves tinkering with what makes them tick. He's pretty much always known what he wanted to be: a planetologist. Though he loves his homeworld, and gets on well with his family, he knew the best possible way to study the greatest number of planets would be to join Starfleet. He takes being cooped up in "tiny" tin cans as a necessary price to pay for getting to tromp about on new worlds, and his passion for the Great Outdoors is matched only by his passion for working out new wrinkles on established knowledge to present in controversial papers to his academic colleagues. (One of his first such efforts, at age fourteen, worked out the math behind Louhi's wobbles and some of its implications for the future of its plate tectonics; despite the furor it caused, its conclusions seem mostly to have been borne out.) Janne is brilliant, eccentric, affable, and highly charismatic, able to smooth over differences with a hearty laugh and a quirky, off-kilter observation. Which makes him, if not the best choice for a Science Officer, well, Starfleet will make do, I'm sure. He has an annoying habit of letting paperwork and reporting slide while working out a theory, then catching up on it all in one night (drinking too much coffee and swearing profusely over the "bean counters"); his results are always excellent, which helps to make up for his somewhat erratic notion of a schedule. He enjoys bicycling, swimming, and is addicted to a series of Bollywood murder mystery holonovels in which he plays the famous Inspector Gundhalinu. Janne will fight fiercely for whatever resources he feels his science department will need, and woe betide the Captain who asks one to many times for him to scan that ionic disturbance off the port bow which might possibly be a cloaked Romulan warship when he wants to lead an away team down to the surface to collect rocks. It's pronounced "YAH-nuh EER-yoh," by the way.
